Because I'm all about looking for value with pitchers for my MLB DraftKings Team, I can't put Luis Severino on the team. Hey, I know. Severino, the New York Yankees' ace, could dominate the rival Boston Red Sox on Saturday.
But, I must stick with my process. The only way to know if a process works or not is to get enough data to figure it out. Check out my Top 3 Value Pitchers, and Top 3 Pitchers to Avoid for Saturday, August 12.
Top 3 Value Pitchers to Add
1. Aaron Nola, Philadelphia Phillies
Nola hasn't allowed more than 2 earned runs in a single game since giving up 5 to the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 4 to 5 Phillies loss on June 16. Nola has a 3.12 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, and a surprising 8 and 7 winning record.
The Phillies battle the Mets on Saturday. The Mets have a .419 batting average versus Nola. That's the bad news. The good news is that Nola's only faced Mets' batters 31 times. He's pitching so well right now that I must take a shot. Also, you know he's only going to cost around $6,500 or so.
2. Drew Pomeranz, Boston Red Sox
Pomeranz is another guy that can sneak in under the radar. Pomeranz dominated the Chicago White Sox in his last start. He allowed 1 earned run off 7 hits in 6.1 innings pitched. He struck out 8. The Red Sox beat the White Sox 4 to 1. The Yankees bat .268 versus Pomeranz.
So, he's not a slam dunk. But, most MLB DraftKings players are going to jump on Severino in this game. I think it's worth it to take a risk on the other pitcher.
3. Jeff Hoffman, Colorado Rockies
Hoffman's 5.03 ERA, and 1.32 ERA make him a play against for most daily fantasy players. Not me. I like Hoffman's last start where he pitched 7 innings. He only yielded 1 earned run off 4 hits while striking out 8. Hoffman's away ERA is a decent 3.65. The Miami Marlins have never faced Hoffman. If his good stuff is working, he could be the pitching pick of the day.
Top 3 Pitchers to Avoid
1. Jon Lester, Chicago Cubs
JL's going to be one of the higher cost pitchers for Saturday, August 12. His ability to shut down Saturday's opponent, the Arizona Diamondbacks, must be called into question. The D'Backs bat .267 against Lester. Arizona ran JL off the mound after 4 innings the last time he faced them. They garnered 5 hits, and 3 earned runs.
2. Chris Archer, Tampa Bay Rays
There's a chance Archer could dominate the Tribe on Saturday. Cleveland only bats .239 versus Archer. Then again, the last time Cleveland faced Archer they took him to the woodshed with 6 earned runs off 5 hits in only 5 innings. Since the Rays' ace figures to cost at least $11,000 on August 12, I'm passing.
3. Carlos Martinez, St. Louis Cardinals
The Atlanta Braves aren't an easy out this season. Carlos Martinez's record is only 8 and 9. His ERA is 3.52. He's faced Atlanta batters 67 times. The Braves have 19 hits off Carlos. 2 went for home runs. Atlanta bats .284 against Martinez. I can't put him on the team considering what his salary is likely to be.
