2017 NFL Week 17 is finally here. With my last regular season NFL DraftKings Classic Team this year, I'm giving it a final shot at the big money. Who knows? Week 17 might be my week.
I have as good of a shot as anyone else. What's my philosophy in Week 17? First, I'm adding players that have a lot to play for. Second, I'm adding some players that have nothing to play for except pride. Pride can be a huge motivator. When you add proud offensive players to a mix that includes teams that don't appear capable of containing them, you've got a shot at big money in Week 17.
Check it out!
NFL Week 17 Classic Team
QB – Jimmy Garoppolo, $6,700, San Francisco at L.A. Rams
Since acquiring Jimmy Garoppolo, the San Francisco 49'ers have won 4 in a row. SF is now 5 and 10 on the season. The Rams have a decent defense. I'm not worried, though. SF is playing for pride. They're hot. Going into the off-season on a 5-game win streak means something to teams like the San Francisco 49'ers.
Another reason not to worry about Garoppolo versus the Rams is because he was brilliant against the best pass defense in the NFL in Week 16. Garoppolo completed 70% of his passes for 242 yards. He also threw 2 TDs and only 1 interception. Garoppolo's QB rating ended up at 102.4.
The week before versus the Tennessee Titans, Garoppolo completed 72% of his passes. He threw for 381 yards. He threw a TD pass. His QB rating ended up at 106.8. Jimmy could feast on a Rams' defense that figures to rest many of it's starters. I think he's a great add in NFL Week 17.
RB – Alvin Kamara, $7,900, New Orleans at Tampa Bay
Kamara didn't rush the ball all that well versus the Atlanta Falcons defense in Week 16. But, QB Drew Brees did target Alvin 9 times. He caught 7 of the passes for 58 yards. He also rushed for 32 yards. Alvin's numbers should be much higher in Week 17.
New Orleans can't take the chance of losing home field in the NFC Wildcard Round. The Saints must beat Tampa to secure the NFC South Division title. That's the only way they can play at home next week. The last time New Orleans faced the Buccaneers, Kamara was good for 68 rushing yards and a rushing TD. He also 6 of 7 targets for 84 yards and a TD.
Alvin should have a monster bounce back game versus the Buccaneers defense on Sunday.
RB – LeSean McCoy, $8,000, Buffalo at Miami
LeSean McCoy could be the highest fantasy points player in NFL Week 17. The Bills need McCoy to have a fantastic game. He should easily acquire over 25 touches in this one. The reason is because the Bills must win to have any shot at securing a playoff spot.
In Buffalo's 24 to 16 win over Miami in Week 15, McCoy only rushed for 50 yards and a TD. He did catch 4 of 5 targets for 46 yards and a TD, though. The Bills should lean on McCoy all day if they have any hopes of stamping their ticket to the postseason.
WR – T.Y. Hilton, $5,900, Indianapolis vs Houston
Jacoby Brissett to T.Y. should shine on Dec. 31. The Colts battle one of the the worst pass defenses in the NFL. Houston yields 246.3 passing yards per game. Brissett targeted Hilton 12 times in Week 16. Hilton caught 6 of the passes for 100 yards. If I can get a TD out of T.Y. on Sunday, I'll be ecstatic.
WR – Josh Doctson, $4,400, Washington at New York Giants
Doctson's averaging under 8 fantasy football points per game. He did catch 2 of 13 targets for 61 yards and a TD in Week 16. That was good for 14.1 fantasy football points. Doctson figures to get loose versus the New York Giants horrible defense. Landon Collins is out. Collins let it be known that Eli Apple is a “cancer”. The G-Men might not even play defense on Sunday.
WR – Ted Ginn Jr., $5,100, New Orleans at Tampa Bay
I believe Ginn Jr. presents great value. He didn't play against the New York Jets in Week 15 due to sore ribs. In Week 16, he played against Atlanta and came up huge. Ginn Jr. caught 4 passes for 76 yards. He scored a TD. In New Orleans last versus the Buccaneers, Ginn Jr. caught 4 of 5 targets for 59 yards and a TD. Because the Saints rush the ball so well, and because their running backs catch the ball so well, Ted might get behind the Bucs defense again on Dec. 31.
TE – Antonio Gates, $4,200, L.A. Chargers vs Oakland
TE Hunter Henry is on I-R due to a lacerated kidney. Gates didn't start in Week 16. He became Philip Rivers top target, though. Antonio caught 6 of 8 targets for 81 yards and a TD. He also faces the 30th ranked defense versus tight-ends in the NFL on Dec. 31.
Here's the thing, the L.A. Chargers must beat the Oakland Raiders in NFL Week 17. If the Bolts don't beat the rival Raiders, they're out of the playoffs. I expect Rivers to go to the Gates well early and often. Rivers to Gates is a legendary combination. Why not lean on it for a shot at a playoff berth?
FLEX – Carlos Hyde, RB, $4,900, San Francisco at L.A. Rams
Hyde is a shoo-in to get 16 to 21 carries in this game. San Francisco has been hot. Hyde's scored a TD in 2 out of the 49'ers last 3 contests. Normally, it would be tough to go against the Rams defense at home. Not in Week 17. Again, there's a great chance that the Rams rest starters on both offense and defense. I believe that's likely to happen.
If it does, Hyde should have a decent day rushing the football. In Week 16's 44 to 33 upset win over the Jaguars, Hyde caught all 3 of his targets for 19 yards. He could have a much better day catching the football on Sunday.
DEF – Indianapolis Colts, $2,900, Indianapolis vs Houston – The Colts don't have a very good defense. Every DraftKings contest player knows this. However, there is a reason to add the Indianapolis Colts to my Classic Team for Week 17.
The Colts battle the Houston Texans on Sunday. The Texans haven't scored more than 7 points in each of their last 2 games. Not only that, but the Texans last 2 healthy quarterbacks aren't that healthy. T.J. Yates is listed as probable due to a concussion. Taylor Heinicke is listed as questionable due to a concussion.
When Indy beat Houston 20 to 17 earlier this season, they held the Texans to 94 total rushing yards. They held the Texans to 194 net passing yards by garnering 2 sacks. Finally, they forced 2 fumbles, recovering 1. A repeat performance could pay big dividends.
Good luck in all of your NFL Week 17 DraftKings Contests!
