The Miami Dolphins' training camp just started. Already, it's not going well. The Fins have suffered two major injuries to their two biggest stars on offense: running back Jay Ajayi, and quarterback Ryan Tannehill. I take a look at Ajayi's injury first. Then, I look into Tannehill's injury.
RB Jay Ajayi's Injury
Ajayi is currently in the NFL's concussion protocol. Per this story on NFL Network, Miami is taking a precautionary measure with Ajayi. What they mean by that is Ajayi's injury hasn't been declared a concussion yet. They expect Ajayi to miss a week, to pass the concussion protocol tests, and then to be back on the field soon.
I'm not sure that will be the case. A new study just published on Sports Illustrated says that 99% of the brains of former players donated to a study showed chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. What that tells me is that every blow to the head is likely a concussion, or is the precursor to a concussion.
The problem with concussions is that standards on what's a concussion seems to deal a lot with subjectivity. Are the player's eyes dilated? Did he follow the flashlight correctly?
I believe any head injury in football is significant.
Fantasy Football Impact: Even if Jay Ajayi ends up back on the field during training camp, he's an iffy prospect to draft early. Last season Ajayi snuck up on defenses, he won't do that this season. Not only is Ajayi now a known commodity, but like I wrote above, any head injury is significant.
Who knows when it might happen, but the chances that Ajayi suffers a concussion during the season is good. I mean, he suffered one, or something that shows the symptoms of a concussion, in the first week in training camp.
Beware drafting Jay Ajayi too early in your season long drafts.
QB Ryan Tannehill
Tannehill scrambled and then injured his left knee just this morning on August 3. The problem with Tannehill's injury is that occurred to the knee where he was wearing a left knee brace. Why does Tanny wear a left knee brace? He suffered a sprained MCL and ACL in his left knee last season.
It's a bad sign that Tannehill went down without being touched. Maybe, the left knee just isn't where it should be.
For the Dolphins, if Tannehill needs surgery on the knee, the 2017-2018 NFL Season is over before it began. Tanny showed signs last season of turning into the QB that Miami fans have always envisioned him to be. He completed over 67% of his passes. His QB rating in 2016 was the best it's ever been during his career at 93.5.
Tannehill's back-ups are David Fales, Brandon Doughty, and Matt Moore.
Fantasy Football Impact: Tannehill projected to have the best season of his NFL career. It's Adam Gase's second season as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Gase is a brilliant offensive coach. He knows how to get the best out of quarterbacks.
But, if Tannehill's having problems just getting around the football field with his busted knee during training camp, how bad is it going to be during the regular season? Nobody should consider drafting Ryan Tannehill in season long NFL Fantasy Football Drafts unless he's up there, and you've got every other position covered. By covered, I mean you've gone four deep at RB and WR, and at least 2 deep at TE.
Also, make sure your kicker and defense is in place before drafting Ryan Tannehill.
