The list of MLB pitchers for this Sunday makes it tough. I settled on deciding among Seattle's James Paxton, Boston's Eduardo Rodriguez, and Milwaukee's Zach Davies. The good news is that I should be able to load up on solid hitters.
I'm leaving Lance McCullers Jr. and Justin Verlander off my Sunday MLB DraftKings squad. Check out the pitchers I'm using and refusing for Sunday, July 30!
Top 3 Pitchers to Add
1. James Paxton, Seattle Mariners
Paxton's only faced a single New York Met batter in his career. No problem. James Paxton is Seattle's ace. He's 10 and 3 on the season. His ERA is 2.84. His WHIP is 1.11. He should have no trouble shutting down the Mets' batting lineup on July 30.
I've already penciled in the Mariners' ace.
2. Eduardo Rodriguez, Boston Red Sox
In his first two starts since early June, Rodriguez hasn't thrown particularly well. He should throw better as his innings increase. My hope is that he hits his stride on Sunday, his third start since coming back from the injury.
Eduardo faces a team in Kansas City that he's had decent success against. KC only bats .233 versus Rodriguez. The bad news is that Eduardo's faced KC batters 43 times. That's not enough at-bats to get an idea on how they'll approach the Boston pitcher on Sunday.
If Rodriguez turns the corner in this game, he'll pitch lights out. If he doesn't, forget it. He could easily give up 4 earned runs in less than 6 innings pitched. So, why is he on my to use list? That's how difficult it is to find solid pitchers on July 30 after James Paxton.
3. Zach Davies, Milwaukee Brewers
Davis has hit his stride. Zach has been brilliant in his last 2 starts. He's pitched a total of 14 innings while allowing 0 earned runs. The only real issue I have with adding Davies to Sunday's line-up is that he has a 6.45 home ERA. That's not close to his road ERA. Will Davies falter? I don't know.
Paxton's a go. But, after Paxton, I haven't decided on using Zach Davies or Eduardo Rodriguez.
Top 3 Pitchers to Stay Away From
1. Lance McCullers, Jr., Houston Astros
McCullers has fallen apart since July. I'm not sure what the issue is, but there's absolutely no reason to pay the salary cost to put McCullers on your MLB DraftKings Team for this Sunday. Since July, he's pitched a total of 13.2 innings. He's allowed 24 hits, 15 earned runs, and he's walked 7. His WHIP is 2.27 while his ERA is 9.88. Ouch.
2. Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers
Verlander has been just okay all year long. He hasn't done anything special in July. His ERA is 4.60 while his WHIP is 1.43. The Astros, Detroit's opponent on July 30, pummeled Verlander the last time they faced him. The Stros beat him up for 6 earned runs off 9 hits in 5.2 innings pitched.
3. Jordan Montgomery, New York Yankees
Montgomery's overall numbers aren't too bad. He has a 3.92 ERA. His WHIP is 1.22. But, he's been too inconsistent this year. I just don't know if he has one of his bad games on Sunday. Just because of that, it's hard for me to pay the likely salary cost to put him on the team.
