As of July 23, 6 First Round Picks are holding out. ESPN writer Dan Graziano breaks down why this is the case. In this blog, I'm not so interested on why teams are having trouble signing their Round 1 picks. I'm more interested in how not signing their Round 1 picks could affect the teams during the NFL Regular Season.
Check out my take on how not signing the following picks might affect their respective teams.
6 First Round Picks Holding Out
3. Solomon Thomas, DE, San Francisco 49'ers
This could be a big deal for the San Francisco 49'ers. The Niners had Solomon Thomas number 1 on their draft board. They traded down a spot, and still got Thomas. The 49'ers were high-fiving each other after convincing the Chicago Bears that the Bears had to trade up or else they were going to grab QB Mitch Trubisky.
None of that matters if Thomas misses any training camp time. Thomas was already penciled in as a key starter for SF on defense.
5. Corey Davis, WR, Tennessee Titans
Davis is a talented WR. He's the wide receiver that's supposed to help QB Marcus Mariota jump to elite status. Mariota has played well in his first 2 seasons in the NFL. He's got a fantastic rushing attack to lean on. He's got one of the better tight-ends in the league in Delanie Walker.
The only thing missing from Mariota's cache of weapons is a great wide receiver. Davis is supposed to be that great wide receiver. But, like Thomas, Davis can't miss any training camp time. It takes rookies much longer to catch up than it does veterans.
6. Jamal Adams, S, New York Jets
Since I rated Adams the can't miss player of the 2017 NFL Draft, you know what I think about the Jets not getting a deal done (yet!) with Jamal.
I believe Adams is so talented that NYJ should pretty much give him what he wants. As long as he's not asking for anything out of the ordinary. The Jets need Adams in training camp. Stop fooling around J-E-T-S.
10. Patrick Mahomes II, QB, Kansas City Chiefs
Mahomes II holding out shouldn't affect the Kansas City Chiefs this season. KC drafted Mahomes II to prepare for the future. Their starting quarterback is Alex Smith. Mahomes missing any training camp time, though, could hurt his development. He's nowhere near ready to start. Still, it's not a good look if he's not there on the first day of training camp.
24. Gareon Conley, CB, Oakland Raiders
The Raiders are expected to contend for the AFC Championship this season. They turned plenty of heads this past April when they drafted former Ohio State cornerback Gareon Conley. Conley might be charged for sexual assault.
If Conley isn't charged, and he gets to training camp on time, he could turn into a solid contributor on the Raiders' defense. But, there's a lot of drama surrounding Conley for what should be a Lombardi Trophy contender. This situation doesn't feel positive at all.
25. Jabril Peppers, S, Cleveland Brown
Peppers doesn't have the best reputation. Sitting out of training camp is a really bad look for him. He's also a tweener, meaning that it's difficult to find where he's going to play once he gets to training camp. I don't know. The Browns need a lot more than an undersized strong safety to compete in the AFC North. Maybe, Cleveland doesn't care so much about signing Peppers at this point?
That's probably a good assumption.
